The IBM Analytic Solutions product family houses over 10 different products, each that offer their own unique solutions for users to make the most out of their data. While different, the products work together as a system and need to be cohesive.
To ensure that a consistent design language is applied across the product I was assigned to create a style guide for the Analytics Solutions product family. There was a style guide in place prior to beginning this project, however it was a pdf document that didn’t hold much value to both our design and development team. It had been edited and passed around which created a lack of consistency and it did not consider factors such as accessibly, designing for mobile and animation.
Knowing that we wanted an style guide that could easily be updated, that both design and development could find use in it, and could house real examples of how the products should look and feel my team and I set out to a create a style guide site.
We began with researching the 10+ teams to understand the needs of their products as well as get a better understanding of how to define the Analytics Solutions brand personality. Next we created a auditing process, which required designers a developers representatives from the various products teams to provide feedback for the elements we we’re placing in the guide before we posted them to the site.
Once on the site, the different elements were not static images but live coded into the site so that our teammates could interact with them and see how the look and feel of the elements should be. Underneath each element we provide designer notes as well as code, so our developers to have that code right at their hands instead of trying to recreate it.
The creation of this site was a huge success. Almost immediately we noticed that all the products were becoming more consistent, that design and development were able to work at a faster rate and that communication amongst the teams had drastically increased.

During my internship at Big-Giant one of the most exciting projects I was assigned to was to help creating various layouts for Nikes Camp Victory, as part of the track and field Olympic trials in Eugene, OR. Located at Hayward Field, the birth place of the Nike brand, the pieces were created to celebrate the running community, the brand’s heritage of speed and it’s commitment to the future of sport.
